Mack needs to get to Froch early if he wants to win

Image: Mack needs to get to Froch early if he wants to winBy Scott Gilfoid: IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) has what appears to be a nice soft opponent for his next fight on November 17th against Yusaf Mack (31-4-2, 17 KO’s) at the Capital FM Arena, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom. It probably will be a horrible mismatch that boxing fans hate watching unless their idea of entertainment is to watch mismatches.

Mack, 32, does have decent power going for him. He’s not a huge puncher, but he’s got power slightly below former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute. His power isn’t Mack’s problem. His problem is he has difficulties handling the power of his opponents, as we’ve seen already with Mack losing to Glen Johnson, Tavoris Cloud, Librado Andrade and Alejandro Berrio all by knockouts.

If Mack’s chin was better, he’d be a decent fighter. But since he has problems taking heavy shots, I think it’s important for him to go all out to try and KO Froch in the first few rounds. That’s how I would approach this fight if I were Mack or his trainer.

Mack has got to see the fight as a three rounder, because he’s not going to last much longer than that if he takes it easy on Froch and tries to box him. Mack is going to get knocked out early in this fight whether he runs or attacks Froch. As such, I think Mack is much better off going all out to try and knock Froch’s head off as fast as he can.

We’ve seen Froch get hurt in his fights against Americans Jermain Taylor and Andre Dirrell when those two fighters put some hard leather on Froch, so it’s not as if it’s impossible to KO him. Mack will have to just out of the gate quick with both fists flying and aiming only for Froch’s head. He can forget about body shots and just focus on trying to knock Froch cold.

If Mack goes all out early in the first three rounds and leaves nothing on the table, I think he has a decent chance of knocking Froch out. You have to remember that Froch is slow as heck, and he seems to start slowly and build up from there like an old train. This is why Mack has to jump Froch early with a furious attack to see if he can get the Brit while he’s off guard.

Mack’s assets are his power, speed and athleticism. He’s got to take advantage of that by looking to brain Froch as quick as possible on November 17th. If Mack does that, I have a feeling he way find success and walk out of the Nottingham Arena with Froch’s International Boxing Federation title.
