Image: Khan: Me and Pacquiao are the best offensive fighters in the world, but defensively we have problemsBy William Mackay: Amir Khan has lost his last two fights and his career on the brink of failure. He’s at the point now where if he loses his next fight, he could find it very tough to crawl out of the hole that he’s put himself into. For this reason it was more than a little amusing to see Khan lumping himself in the same boat at Manny Pacquiao when talking about his own offensive skills.

Khan told the Manchester Evening News “If we had the defense we should have had we would be the best fighter in the world.”

It’s unclear who Khan is referring to when he says “We”. It could be a way of talking about himself. It does seem a little odd, though. The way Khan walks about “we” it reminds me of how politicians talk after they get caught screwing up. One of their standard lines are “Mistakes were made.” They don’t say “I made a mistake.” It’s “mistakes were made.” It just looks like Khan isn’t fully confronting his problems.

Khan continues “That’s the downfall of me and Manny Pacquiao. We’re both offensively the best fighters in the world, but defensively we’re not the best.”

Khan comparing himself to one of the best fighters in the world. That’s hilarious yet sad at the same time because of how out of touch Khan seems with the reality of his situation. It’s a positive that he at least is acknowledging that he has defensive flaws.

Now it looks like Khan is going to boot his trainer Freddie Roach. That’s like passing the responsibility for his loss onto the shoulders of Roach. That doesn’t seem right. It’s not Roach’s fault that Khan got blasted out by Danny Garcia, and it’s not Roach’s fault that Khan shoved off on Lamont Peterson enough to where the referee had to take two points off.
