Golovkin would give Froch problems

Image: Golovkin would give Froch problemsBy Scott Gilfoid: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) says he’d be open to fighting super middleweights in order to get the biggest fight possible if he can’t get something closer to his weight. Golovkin, 30, is already sparring with light heavyweights and cruiserweights because he’s too powerful and tough to spar with middleweights. It would be interested to see how Golovkin would do against IBF middleweight champion Carl Froch.

If this fight could be made, I see Golovkin giving Froch major problems due to Golovkin’s superior power, inside game, accuracy, defense and youth. About the only thing I can see in Froch’s favor would be his size and reach. But even that wouldn’t be a big deal for the 5’10” Golovkin, because he’s taller than the 5’9″ Glen Johnson, and he gave Froch all kinds of problems in their fight in the Super Six tournament at the age of 42. If Johnson was able to give Froch that much trouble can you imagine what Golovkin would do to Froch? I think he’d give him a major beating, worse than the one that Andre Ward gave him.

The hardest thing that Golovkin would have to deal with is fighting Froch in Nottingham. That’s where the fight would no doubt take place, and it might make it hard on Golovkin to win a decision over there. However, thankfully, Golovkin brings his judges with him in the form of his powerful fists and I don’t think the three physical judges would be needed for a Froch-Golovkin fight.

It’s not realistic that Froch would choose to fight Golovkin because he’s taking a soft opponent for his next fight in November when he faces Yusaf Mack, and after that Froch will be fighting former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute next year and possibly Mikkel Kessler. I’m not so sure that Froch will get the Kessler fight, even if he beats Bute in their rematch, because I don’t see Kessler agreeing to fight Froch in Nottingham and I doubt Froch will be agreeable to fighting Kessler in Denmark or Germany. The fight will fall apart over the location of the bout. So, Froch might as well try and fight Golovkin since he’s probably not going to get Kessler.
