Golovkin wants either Chavez Jr. or Martinez – he doesn’t have a preference

Image: Golovkin wants either Chavez Jr. or Martinez - he doesn't have a preferenceBy Allan Fox: WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) doesn’t care whether he gets Sergio Martinez of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next, as long as he gets one of them in the ring so that he can prove himself. And if the winner of the Chavez Jr-Martinez fight on September 15th wants nothing to do with him, Golovkin will then target IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale now that he’s beaten WBA Super World middleweight champion Felix Sturm to take his belt.

Golovkin told RingTV “I’m ready. I think Sergio is a much better boxer. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Now, he’s strong. He’s bigger. He’s a very good boxer too. It doesn’t matter.”

It doesn’t really matter as long as Golovkin can get the winner of that fight. Even the loser of that fight would make a good opponent because Golovkin could get a big name to fight and it would show the differences between what he can do against the loser. It’s obviously not nearly as interesting as getting the winner of that fight, though. Hopefully Martinez and Chavez Jr. are both interested in facing Golovkin because it would be a pity if they choose to ignore him, and face a lesser fighter that their promoter wants them to fight.

That’s the problem with boxing nowadays. The promoters are so careful in matching up their fighters to avoid most of the risk, that they end up stunting their own fighters careers by matching them against a bunch a soft guys or older fighters that have lost a few steps in order to make sure they win at all costs.

Golovkin needs to take the best fight he can get, and move on if he can’t get either Martinez or Chavez Jr. in the ring. He won’t need them if he keeps winning because the boxing world will soon recognize him as the best fighter in the division if he can keep beating guys like he did against Grzegorz Proksa last Saturday night in his 5th round knockout victory.
