Dibella: Would Chavez Jr. have been around in the 12th if Martinez hadn’t broke his hand in the 4th?

Image: Dibella: Would Chavez Jr. have been around in the 12th if Martinez hadn't broke his hand in the 4th?By Dan Ambrose: Lou Dibella, the promoter for newly crowned WBC middleweight champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s), doesn’t have any doubts that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (46-1-1, 32 KO’s) would have never even seen the 12th round had Martinez not broken his left power hand in the 4th round and been forced to use it without power in the last 8 rounds.

Dibella said on his twitter page “Would Jr. have been around in the 12th if Sergio didn’t break his left in the 4th? Power lefts and kid [Chavez Jr] would have been gone.”

What’s interesting is that ESPN writer Dan Rafael quickly responded by saying “Would Sergio have been around if it was a 15 round fight?”

I’m assuming that Rafael is talking about an injured Martinez with a broken left hand, and not a fully functional Martinez without a badly broken left hand. I can’t see there being a 15th round if Martinez was healthy. But with that said, I think Martinez would have made it to the 15th round last Saturday night after getting hurt in the 12th. I honestly do.

If you look at the action, Martinez had recovered from being knocked down and as the fight ended it was him that was taking the fight to Chavez Jr. and giving better than he was getting. Chavez Jr. would have been the one that would have been in trouble had the fight gone 15, not Martinez. It would have been brutal for Chavez Jr. because Martinez would have gone back to boxing and wouldn’t have left himself open to any more of Chavez Jr’s power shots.

You really got to give Martinez a lot of credit for fighting for 8 rounds with a broken left hand. That took a lot of courage for him to do that and still fight through the pain. Martinez didn’t quit like Victor Ortiz, and kept pounding Chavez Jr. with lefts despite what must have been a lot of pain that he was feeling in that hand.
