Image: Tony Bellew: I'm on the verge of great thingsBy Scott Gilfoid: Light heavyweight Tony Bellew’s September 8th fight against the dynamite punching Colombian Edison Miranda (35-7, 30 KO’s) is fast approaching and I think the 29-year-old is starting to get ahead himself with his confidence for this fight.

Bellew (17-1, 11 KO’s) said to Sky Sports News “I’m on the verge of great things now. I’ve just got to stay focused and keep working hard.”

Great things? What on earth is Bellew talking about. He gets whipped by a limited WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly, gets knocked down twice against a 2nd tier fighter Ovill McKenzie, and here’s he’s talking about being close to accomplishing great things? Oh boy, I think we’ve got one here with delusions of grandeur. He’s only facing a journeyman next in 31-year-old Miranda. It’s not as if he’s fighting the very top of the division in WBC light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson, IBF champion Tavoris Cloud or WBA champ Beibut Shumenov.

I mean, let’s put things in perspective. I imagine that the only reason that Miranda was chosen to fight Bellew was because Miranda has lost four out of his last seven fights. That’s awful. I wouldn’t go bragging about greatness if I were Bellew. First things first, he’s got to show that he can beat Bellew, and I don’t think he can unless he runs and stinks up the joint on September 8th in front of his British fans at the Alexandra Palace, Muswell Hill, London, United Kingdom.

I see Miranda shutting up the fans by knocking Bellew out, and turning their mass cheering to a bunch of wailing for their hero Bellew as he gets scooped up off the canvas after getting knocked out by Miranda.

To me, Bellew is more of a one of those gatekeeper/bottom feeder types of fighters. He’s good for beating some of the guys that hang around or come up with inflated records. Honestly, I don’t know where Bellew can go in the division. I mean, he’s in the right division because the light heavyweight division is one of the weakest in all of boxing. I shutter at the thought of what would happen to Bellew if he were fighting in the loaded super middleweight division. It would be bad for him.

I wonder why Bellew has not made an effort to move down in weight to fight at that weight? Oh well, he’s the right place at light heavyweight and maybe one of these days another champion like Cleverly will pick him from the bottom to fight for a world title again. It might not be anytime soon, especially if Miranda whips him on September 8th.
