From this point on there really aren’t too many chances for Sturm to get breathers. The Geale fight is just the start of the big tests for Sturm, as if he can win this fight he’ll either have to finally defend his WBA title against his mandatory challenger Gennady Golovkin or look to get the World Boxing Association to let him bypass that fight to take a fight against WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham instead. Of course, Sturm can always vacate his WBA title and hold onto just the IBF strap, if he can get past Geale on Saturday night. By doing that Sturm would take care of the Golovkin problem permanently.

Sturm has had a couple of close calls in fights against Matthew Macklin and Martin Murray. He got a draw against Murray, but took a lot of punishment in a close fight that many boxing fans felt that should have gone to Murray. In his bout before that, Sturm won a controversial 12 round decision over Macklin. In that fight Sturm appeared to lose it but two judges gave him the decision by the scores of 116-112 and 116-112.

Geale, 31, comes into Saturday’s fight with a six fight win streak dating back to October 2009. He’s looked good since beating Sebastian Sylvester to win the IBF title in May of last year. He’s defended the title twice, beating Eromosele Albert and Osumanu Adama.
