Can Steward turn Khan’s career around?

Image: Can Steward turn Khan's career around?By William Mackay: We could see trainer Freddie Roach get booted from his job by Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) this coming week and replaced by 68-year-old trainer Emanuel Steward. Khan says he’ll be making a decision in a week about whether to keep Roach or not, and that decision could come as early this week.

Khan probably isn’t eager to dump Roach, but with him having lost his last two fights to Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia, the situation is now dire to where Khan can no longer dilly dally around with Roach if he’s not learning what he needs to to keep from getting beat.

I hate to say it but Steward is going to have to be a miracle worker to turn things around for Khan, and I have a feeling that Steward is in a situation where he’ll likely fail in having any positive influence on Khan. There’s a few things that will get in the way of Steward being able to make Khan a champion again that doesn’t get knocked out or beaten by decision.

First of all, Khan’s chin is a major problem for him. He can’t seem to take a big shot without being staggered or knocked out. We saw that in his fights against Breidis Prescott, Marcos Maidana and Garcia. Steward can teach Khan to fight tall and stay at range, but if Khan can’t take an occasional big shot, it’s not going to work out well for Steward.

Khan has too much pride and he can’t seem to take getting hit hard without wanting to fire back on his opponent immediately. There’s too much ego there, and not enough common sense. If Steward can teach Khan not react in his traditional ways each time he gets hit, he’ll make some inroads but I find it hard to see Khan changing in this part of his game.

The other problem is Khan gets cocky when he’s dominating someone and starts getting reckless by slugging with his opposition. We saw what happened to him against Garcia when Khan was trying to impress the fans. He got hit with a big left hook tot he neck and never recovered from that punch.
