Image: Steward: Khan's loss to Garcia was good for boxingBy William Mackay: Trainer/HBO analyst Emanuel Steward’s take on former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan’s recent loss to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia was that it was good for boxing.

Steward told Esnewsreporting.com “It was great for boxing. You’ve got a 6 to 1 underdog [Garcia]. What was beautiful about it was Amir Khan didn’t do anything wrong. He just got hit in an exchange. Still, he gave us about four minutes of drama where he was out on his feet. He knew what was going on but he just couldn’t get his equilibrium back. Great, great fight.”

It was good for boxing to see a new name Danny Garcia pick up some badly needed attention by sparking Khan out. However, I disagree with Khan not having made any mistakes. If he were a normal fighter I would agree that he really didn’t make any mistakes up to the point of being hurt by Garcia. However, Khan went into the fight with a questionable chin, and because of that he should have been boxing Garcia instead of trying to slug it out the way he was doing.

Additionally, Khan made a huge mistake of continuing to try and slug it out with Garcia after he’d been knocked down by him in the last seconds of the 3rd round. Khan got up and tried to punch with Garcia in the next round instead of clinching and ended up getting knocked down two more times. This made Garcia’s job much easier because he was able to find Khan easy with his power shots to continue to hurt him and eventually take him out.
