Martinez wants to take the judges completely out of any role in the outcome of this fight by knocking the 26-year-old Chavez Jr. out on September 15th in their fight at the Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Martinez said to the WBC website “I’m preparing to defeat Chavez by knockout in order to avoid a bad decision…Paul Williams had been stopped in his career, but I beat him by knockout. And now I’m going to defeat Chavez with a KO.”

I agree with Martinez. It might be a good idea for him be looking for a knockout against the 26-year-old Chavez Jr. on September 15th just in case the judges turn this into another controversial decision that leaves a bad taste in the mouths of boxing fans.

It’s not like Chavez Jr. has had to worry about decisions all that much recently, as he’s been knocking out almost all of his opposition since 2010, but you’d hate to see this be the fight where he get an ugly decision because the chances are too high that the winner of this fight would just move on rather doing the right thing to clear up the controversy by fighting a rematch.

I don’t see Chavez Jr. giving Martinez a rematch if he wins by a decision that boxing fans don’t agree with. Bob Arum, Chavez Jr’s promoter, makes the decisions about his career and he’ll likely have him move forward to other fights such as unification bouts or a fight against one of his Top Rank stable fighters Kelly Pavlik.
