Image: Schaefer wants to put together Guerrero vs. Mayweather boutBy Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer says he’s going to try and put together a fight between his Golden Boy promoted fighter WBC welterweight interim champion Robert Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO’s) and unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) in the coming months.

Schaefer told RingTV “The dream fight for him [Guerrero] is a fight against Floyd Mayweather, and so on. We’ll see in the coming weeks and months what’s going to happen there.”

Guerrero, 29, has wanted a fight against Mayweather in the worst way for well over a year now since he was fighting at lightweight, and despite the fact that Guerrero looked less than impressive in struggling to beat the highly rated Selcuk Aydin last month, he still feels he’s deserving of a fight against Floyd.

Schaefer has his work cut out for him in trying to put together a fight between Guerrero and Mayweather, because there’s not a whole of interest in that fight. Guerrero doesn’t have a lot of boxing fans and he doesn’t bring in big ratings for HBO. It would obviously be a situation where it would greatly benefit Golden Boy if Mayweather did decide to do them a favor in facing Guerrero, but it might be a mistake on Mayweather’s part if he took that fight because the pay per view numbers would likely be less than spectacular.

Schaefer could help things out if he matched Guerrero against some other welterweights in the division, preferably ones that can actually fight and who aren’t just someone that the World Boxing Council gave an inflated ranking to. If Guerrero could beat someone like Thomas Dulorme, Devon Alexander or Kell Brook, he’d really help himself out. However, it might take wins over all three of those guys for Guerrero to build up enough interest for Mayweather to bother fighting him.

The problem here is that Guerrero would be lucky if he could beat even one of those guys. He doesn’t have any power at welterweight and his stamina isn’t good either. If you put him in with stronger punchers like Alexander, Dulorme and Brook, Guerrero is going to take some awful punishment and if he runs out of gas like he did against Aydin, he’ll get knocked out. He’ll likely get knocked out anyway, but he’d definitely get knocked out if he fades late against one of those guys.

Schaefer needs to build Guerrero up before he can fight someone like Mayweather. Right now it would be a joke of a fight because of how awful and mediocre Guerrero looked last time he fought. If he was smart, he’d move back down in weight because I see Guerrero losing to the first good welterweight he fights, and I don’t consider Aydin a good welterweight. He’s a fair one.
