Image: Saul Alvarez wants Floyd Mayweather or Miguel Cotto on December 8thBy Mark Havey: I have said before that WBC light middleweight champion, Saul Alvarez (40-0-1, KO’s 29) is a star of the future. in spite of not being tested against truly dangerous opposition, he has impressed me. He always looks good in his fights and he can only beat who is in front of him. Alvarez has a relatively easy fight on September 15th against Josesito Lopez.

Bleacherreport.com have stated that Alvarez wants Mayweather or Cotto next. But how accurate will my prediction be concerning the future greatness of Alvarez if he meets Floyd Mayweather (43-0, KO’s 26) now? It could go one of two ways. He could look great and propel himself into the pound 4 pound rankings, making him one of boxing’s biggest stars. And if he won? But I expect him to be outclassed by Mayweather’s accuracy, and frustrated by the elusiveness Floyd Mayweather demonstrates. Most of the shots that Alvarez gets close with will bounce off that career defining shoulder. This could lead to Alvarez being just another name on Mayweather’s illustrious record. I do think Alvarez has the ability to trouble Mayweather, just not yet.

Miguel Cotto (37-3, KO’s 30) could be a very good fight. I wanted to see it for a while now. They have similar styles in many ways, especially in their attack based priorities and focus on power. Alvarez has managed to fit a lot into a small space of time. he is only 21 years old and unbeaten. Cotto has been beaten but faced the much more talented opponents, he also has a better KO ratio. It’s a dangerous fight for both parties. I can’t see that fight going the distance. There would be fireworks.
