Quillin, #4 WBA, #5 WBC, needs an important fight in order to keep moving up to try and become a mandatory challenger for one of the champions. Ideally, it would be nice if one of the champs voluntarily chose to fight the hard hitting 29-year-old Quillin, but that’s probably not a realistic option because he’s too dangerous and none of the current champions have shown him any interest in fighting him.

Rubio, 32, has to get past his September 8th opponent Carlos Baldomir, but there’s a great chance that he’ll win that fight and be available to fight Quillin in October. Rubio was recently beaten by WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by a closer than expected 12 round decision loss last February in Texas. Although Rubio fought his heart out, he didn’t have the size to compete against the much heavier Chavez Jr. Rubio lost more because of a lack of size than anything else.

Quillin is coming off of a nice win over 42-year-old Ronald “Winky” Wright last June in a one-sided win for Quillin that sent Wright into retirement. It was a good win, but it also showed that Quillin needs to start facing better opposition because he’s faced mostly beatable fringe contenders and he’s not getting much from being matched up against the likes of Wright, Jason LeHoullier and Craig McEwan.
