By Jim Dower: Former IBF light welterweight champion Lovemore Ndou (49-13-2, 31 KO’s) defeated Gairy St Clair (42-12-2, 18 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Southport RSL Club, Southport, Queensland, Australia. The final judges’ scores were 116-112, 116-112 and 117-112, all for the 40-year-old Ndou.

Using his power advantage, Ndou was able to take the fight to the journeyman St Clair, hitting him hard with shots to the head and body. To St Clair’s credit, he took the shots well and was able to fire back. However, he lacked the power to move Ndou off of him or hurt him in any way.

Ndou fought well until the last part of the fight where he visibly wore down in the last two rounds. St Clair was able to come on during that time and make it a somewhat closer fight. However, he didn’t have the power to really press the worn down Ndou.

St Clair came into the fight having lost eight out of his last twelve fights. It’s hard to imagine how badly St Clair’s career has turned out, as he was a very fine fighter earlier in his career when he held the IBF and IBO super featherweight title in 2006. Things seemed to turn bad for him after he lost his IBF title to Malcolm Klassen in November 2006. It’s been downhill for him ever since.

Ndou came into the fight having lost his last two fights against Saul Alvarez and Kell Brook. Ndou hadn’t fought since last year in June when he was beaten by Kell Brook.
