Image: Mayweather, Bradley and Canelo on Cotto's list for December 1st fightBy Dan Ambrose: Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) is aiming high for his next fight on December 1st at Madison Square Garden, in New York. Rather than taking on one of the top contenders in the division to prove that he deserves to get big paydays, Cotto is aiming at a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or fights against Tim Bradley or WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvares, according to Primerahora.com.

Cotto will be turning 32 in October and he’s got to make the best of the time that he’s got left in the sport.

Cotto was beaten by Mayweather last May and was quite lucky that he wasn’t stopped in the 12th round when Mayweather had him staggering around the ring. Mayweather seemed to have mercy on Cotto, and didn’t pour it on after he had him in bad shape. It made sense for Mayweather not to try and finish Cotto off, because then at least a rematch is still a possibility. Mayweather will be getting out of jail on Friday and he’s already said that he wants to fight again before the end of the year. However, with Cotto being locked in for the December 1st fight, it’s not going to give Mayweather very much time to start getting ready for the fight. The fight would have to be arranged quickly so that Mayweather could adjust to the outside and whip himself back in shape after having been living in a small jail cell since June.

A fight between Cotto and Bradley is a possibility, but not likely because Manny Pacquiao will probably choose to face Bradley in November to avenge his loss to him last June. Even if that fight doesn’t happen, Cotto might have a hard time trying to get Bradley’s promoter Bob Arum to put the fight together because if Cotto whips Bradley, which is probably what would happen, a fight between Pacquiao and Bradley would be worthless. Few people would want to see if after that and Pacquiao would have to live with his defeat against him without being able to avenge it.

Canelo vs. Cotto is the second best fight Cotto can get if he can’t get a rematch with Mayweather. Alvarez is becoming very popular and he’s beatable despite having good skills. At 5’7″, I just don’t know whether Cotto has the size to deal with the bigger, stronger, 5’9″ Alvarez. If Cotto could box for 12 rounds, I think he’d easily beat Canelo. But Cotto’s stamina seems to really tank after the 8th round in most of his fights nowadays.
