Image: Mattysse-Olusegun battle over interim WBC 140 lb title on 9/22By Dan Ambrose: Light welterweight contenders Lucas Matthysse (31-2, 29 KO’s) and Ajose Olusegun (30-0, 14 KO’s) will be going face to face for the interim WBC light welterweight title next month on September 22nd in San Antonio, Texas. The winner of the Matthysse-Olusegun fight will become the mandatory challenger for WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll get a shot against Garcia anytime soon, because Garcia is heading for a rematch against 36-year-old Erik Morales and after that, Garcia will likely defend his titles against Amir Khan in a rematch. Garcia recently knocked Khan out in the 4th round, and Khan badly wants to avenge that loss as soon as humanly possible.

It’s still a good thing for Matthysse to be facing Olusegun for the interim WBC title because it’ll put the winner in a position to where they’ll at least get a good payday in 2013 against whoever emerges as the WBC champion between all the fights that Garcia will be taking part in.

Matthysse has looked really good in winning his last three fights against Sergio Priotti, Angel Martinez and Humberto Soto. Matthysse’s career was hit hard when he suffered back to back questionable decision losses to Zab Juday and Devon Alexander in 2010 and 2011. Matthysse, 29, only has himself to blame, however, because he’s the one that agreed to fight Judah and Alexander in their home cities.

Matthysse had fair warning that he might get jobbed, and after his highly controversial 10 round split decision loss to Judah in November 2010, Matthyse should have gotten a clue and turned down the fight with Alexander in his hometown of Saint Louis, Missouri in June of last year. Matthysse didn’t, and ended up losing another 10 round split decision in a fight he appeared to win. Perhaps jaded, Matthysse chose to fight two little known opponents in Priotti and Angel Martinez in his home country of Argentina.
