Image: Malignaggi-Cano likely for Garcia-Morales II undercard on October 20thBy Allan Fox: It’s looking like WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi (31-4, 7 KO’s) will take a page out of the playbook from fellow Golden Boy Promotions fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez by fighting a guy from a division below him in #7 WBC light welterweight contender Pablo Cesar Cano (25-1-1, 19 KO’s) on October 20th on the undercard of the Danny Garcia vs. Erik Morales II rematch at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn, New York

What’s particularly bad about the Malignaggi-Cano fight is that Malignaggi isn’t even fighting a guy from his own weight division, and instead has decided to fight a 140 pound contender who was already exposed by the past his best Erik Morales last September in a 10th round stoppage loss.

Malignaggi sure seems like he’s milking his World Boxing Association title because there are a lot of better options for fights for him in his own weight division against fighters like Kell Brook, Thomas Dulorne, Mike Jones, Devon Alexander, Carson Jones and Carlos Quintana. Facing Cano just makes Malingaggi look like he’s milking his trap.

There’s talk that Malignaggi may choose to defend his title against Dmitry Salita after the Malignaggi-Cano fight. While it’s good that Salita is at least a welterweight, it’s also bad because Salita was blown out in a 1st round TKO against his opponent good opponent of his career in Amir Khan.
