Lopez was then quickly matched up by his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions against one of their fighters WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO’s) on September 15th at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lopez said to RingTV “People are comparing me to Rocky. I have that story.”

Once again, Lopez finds himself in the role of an underdog and if he’s going to win the fight, then he’ll have to upset the odds made against him. It won’t be easy, though, because the 23-year-old Alvarez is the bigger, stronger and younger fighter. Lopez isn’t old at only 28, but he’s not as young as Alvarez and he doesn’t have the power to match up with him.

If Lopez is going to beat Alvarez it’s going to take a lot of movement and a consistent attack. Lopez can’t just stand in front of Alvarez in this fight because Alvarez is too strong. It’s going to take some boxing skills, persistence, a great game plan and a lot of heart for him to get past Alvarez.

Lopez was beaten last September by a 10 round split decision. A lot of boxing fans feel that Lopez should have won the fight, and I’m in agreement with that. However, there’s no denying that he struggled in that fight with Vargas’ jab and power. If Saul Alvarez is able to land his shots against Lopez the same way that Vargas did then this could be a really tough fight for Lopez. He doesn’t have the power to beat Alvarez in a war, and instead he needs to box if he’s to win.
