Image: Froch needs to fight Dirrell in NovemberBy Scott Gilfoid: With unbeaten South African Thomas Oosthuizen now officially out of the picture for a November fight against IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s), he should now target American talent Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KO’s) to fill the date.

The two fighters already have a controversial 12 round split decision to clear up from 2009, and this would be the perfect opportunity for Froch.

If Froch wants to get on American television then needs to look Dirrell’s way and set up a fight with him.

Of course, that would take a lot of courage for Froch to do this because Dirrell put on a defensive clinic that last time he fought Froch in Nottingham, England three years ago, making the slow Brit miss with his shots all night long. It was one of the most impressive defensive performances I’ve ever seen from a fighter, as Dirrell was un-hittable. The only time that I saw Froch landing anything in the fight was when he was holding and hitting, which I felt Froch should have lost points for and been disqualified.

If Froch wants the very best possible opponent for November then he should call Dirrell and take the chance. It’s a risky fight no doubt, because Dirrell is right up there with Lucian Bute and Mikkel Kessler in terms of being a threat to Froch. I see Dirrell as a lot better than those guys, but since he’s been out of action for so long you can’t really elevate Dirrell over them just yet. But Dirrell is definitely on their level and I can see him schooling Froch and giving him a royal spanking if they were to fight.

At this point, I’d be willing to bet that Dirrell wouldn’t mind coming to Nottingham to fight Froch again, despite having had a really bad experience the last time he was there in 2009.
