Image: Froch could face Nicholson Poulard nextBy Scott Gilfoid: Rather than fight a top super middleweight contender in his next fight in November, IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch (29-2, 21 KO’s) could end up facing #6 WBA light heavyweight contender Nicholson Poulard (19-3, 9 KO’s) next in November in Nottingham, England, according to fightnews.com.

Poulard, the older brother of former WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal, will be turning 35-years-old next month and his main claim to fame is that he was beaten by Canadian journeyman Sebastian Demers by a 12 round unanimous decision in 2009. As far as wins go, Poulard’s best wins of his eight year pro career have come against Larry Sharpe and Lionell Thompson. I mean, there’s really nothing on Poulard’s resume to be impressed about in terms of wins, and he’s pretty much zero to be ranked #6 by the World Boxing Association, as far as I can tell.

The fact that Poulard isn’t ranked by any of the other sanctioning bodies other than the WBA is really telling. I’ve watched only a few of Poulard’s fights and came away terribly unimpressed with what I saw. In particular Poulard’s performance against Demers was just plain awful with Poulard getting backed up and taking punishment by Dembers. If he can’t even beat Demers, who has been beaten by the likes of Arthur Abraham, Dionisio Miranda, Renan St Juste, Brian Vera and Allan Green, then that’s not a good sign for him going into a possible fight against Froch.

Supposedly, Poulard wants to avenge his brother Pascal’s loss to Froch from 2008. Good luck.

I think this is an awful choice for Froch if this indeed who he picks. If Froch wants to take a tune-up bout, he should follow Andre Ward’s lead and at least take a tough opponent like Sakio Bika so that boxing fans can see how he does against a fighter that fought Ward tough.

Poulard has a little bit of right hand power and has a decent left hook going for him. But his problems is when he gets hit back he tends to retreat and just take shots. Froch will probably be able to KO this guy no problem and it won’t mean a thing.
