The important fights will be televised by HBO at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California. As of now, the only fights on the card will be the Donaire-Nishioka and Rios-Alvarado fights. However, there’s likely to be more fights added in the coming months. There’s still a lot of time to go before the card takes place.

Promoter Bob Arum still hasn’t revealed which fight will be the main event, but it would seem logical for the Rios vs. Alvarado fight to get that position because Donaire is facing a guy that’s only well known among hardcore boxing fans in Nishioka.

Although Nishioka is considered by Ring Magazine and Fightnews.com as the number #1 fighter in the super bantamweight division, he’s still not known by casual boxing fans in the United States and much less known than other top super bantamweights like WBC champion Abner Mares and WBA champ Guillermo Rigondeaux. However. Nishioka is arguably not as dangerous as two fighters are, so it’s kind of understandable why Arum decided to match Donaire up with Nishioka instead of them. Donaire has a large following among the Filipino community in the U.S, and Arum doesn’t need to build him up like he does other fighters.

Donaire is going to have a substantial amount of boxing fans following him no matter who he faces. Some of those same fans see Donaire as the next Manny Pacquiao and capable of replacing him as a huge star after he retires from the sport. That remains to be seen whether Donaire can get to that level. Judging by the way he struggled in his last two fights against Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. and Jeffrey Mathebula, you would have to assume that Donaire isn’t the guy that can take Pacquiao’s place. But Arum is going to have to be careful with Donaire if he doesn’t want to risk having get beaten before he starts bringing in the big cash. Putting Donaire in with Rigondeaux or Mares right now could end the Donaire hype with him getting beaten before he’s struck gold under Arum’s guidance.
