Cotto, 31, probably isn’t a strong possibility for Pacquiao because he’ll want Manny to fight him at a catchweight of 150 pounds rather than coming down to 147 and ending up too weight drained and weak to fight effectively.

Cotto already lost to Pacquiao when he fought him in a catchweight title fight back in November 2009 when Cotto fought Pacquiao at a catchweight of 145. Cotto was beaten up and stopped by Pacquiao in a pretty one-sided fight from start to finish. Cotto had the opportunity made available to fight Pacquiao recently, but he turned it down when it was clear that he would have to melt all the way down to 147 lbs to make the fight happen because Pacquiao didn’t want to meet him at 150 lbs for a catchweight that woud make things a little easier for Cotto.

I doubt that Pacquiao’s stance has changed much at all on this subject. He’s probably not going to want to fight Cotto at a catchhweight and that’ll force Cotto to decide if he wants to melt down to 147 or not. Given that Cotto has made a lot of money in the past three years and really doesn’t need money in a bad way, I think he’ll turn Pacquiao down rather than put his health at risk and fighting him at 147.

The thing is Pacquiao isn’t even a champion anymore, so it’s not as if he can’t move up and meet Cotto halfway at least. I could understand Pacquiao having an excuse if he was still the WBO welterweight title holder, but he’s not. He’s just another fighter that lost his title and is looking to get the best possible fight available.
