Arum: There’s not much time to make Pacquiao’s next fight

Unless Pacquiao selects someone very soon, it’s going to leave the 80-year-old Arum with very little time to market the fight to the boxing public.

Luckily for Arum, Pacquiao’s fights pretty much sell themselves at this point in his career and there doesn’t need to be a lengthy amount of time spent on trying to sell the fight to the public. Pacquiao has a built in fan base that will pay to see Pacquiao fight anybody, even retreats like Tim Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Miguel Cotto.

Arum told the Manila Bulletin “There’s not much time.”

Arum is meeting with Pacquiao this week in the Philippines along with Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz to pick out a fighter for his November 10th date in Las Vegas, Nevada. Arum likely has someone in mind that he prefers but Pacquiao ultimately will be the one who decides who his opponent will be.

The names that are being mentioned are Tim Bradley, Juan Manuel Marquez and Miguel Cotto. Bradley and Marquez are the two top picks, because they are fights that are easier to make because there won’t be any issues over the weight. Cotto likely won’t agree to come all the way down to 147lbs to fight the Filipino and it’s equally unlikely that Pacquiao will agree to fight Cotto at a catchweight of 150 lbs.

Arum, like always, hasn’t said what his preference is for Pacquiao to fight, but one gets the impression that Arum likes the idea of Pacquiao fighting Marquez next due to the bigger money that the fight will bring in for pay per view compared to a rematch with Bradley. The Bradley-Pacquiao fight last June brought in a little over 900,000 PPV buys. Arum figures that a fourth fight between Pacquiao and Marquez will draw a higher figure than that.
