Amir Khan does not need a big name trainer

Image: Amir Khan does not need a big name trainerBy Benny James: After two disappointing performances in a row against Peterson and Garcia, its perfectly acceptable to claim that Amir Khan’s career is at an all time low.

Any unbiased knowledgeable boxing fan will share my opinion that Khan should have got the win against the possible cheat Peterson, but the judges got it wrong on the night. It was a close fight but it shouldn’t have been. Khan has the skills to beat almost anybody at light welterweight.

Since his embarrassing knockout defeat to the powerful but technically flawed Garcia there has been constant talk of Khan leaving legendary trainer Freddie Roach who has been guiding Khan ever since Breidis Prescott sent Khans hype wagon and ego crashing down to earth in the first round of their 2008 fight in Khans first ever PPV bout.

Eight years ago the 17 year old Amir Khan rocked the boxing world with his brilliant performance at the 2004 Athens Olympic games where he walked away with a silver medal. The British media had found a new star to sell to the public and they helped hype up Amir as he turned professional and worked his way through 18 bums in televised bouts.

In these past 8 years Khan has suffered from overconfidence, believing his own hype and has been surrounded with yes men and hangers on who are more interested in lining their own pockets than assisting Khan in reaching his true potential as a professional prize fighter.

I am now going to point out why I believe Freddie Roach is no longer the right trainer for Amir Khan, although firstly I think its only right to mention that Roach WAS the right trainer after the Prescott loss. Freddie was at his peak in terms of fame and respect due to the dominance of his protege Manny Pacquiao. This helped rebuild Khan’s confidence and led him onto winning his first world title.

In 2012 training with Roach is not helping Khan who does not seem to be learning and certainly does not get the attention a fighter of this level requires at this stage in his career. Freddie has his fingers in too many pies, Khan needs a trainer who can spend more time with him.

Flying around the world to train cant be helping the situation either, Amir Khan should find a British trainer and train at home. He should also give up on this stupid idea of conquering America. Sure go over to America if you ever get any super fights but in the meantime fight in the UK where you have the bigger fan base and can generate more money for both you and your opponents.

People are suggesting Khan should hook up with Emanuel Steward, this is a big mistake. Steward is a brilliant trainer, but he thrives with heavyweights and has never had the same success with lighter fighters.

Floyd Mayweather Sr is a decent trainer but who has he trained? Who has he built up from nothing to world champion? The answer is nobody. Mayweather Sr is living off his son’s hard work and dedication. He trained with Ricky Hatton and we all know how that ended. Mayweather Sr was not committed to the job, and Amir Khan should stay well away.

Amir Khan needs a British trainer who operates close to his family and fan base. He needs a trainer who has experience and will be willing to dedicate enough time to help Khan reach his full potential. He also needs an intelligent trainer to hold his hand, study his opponents with a scientific approach to the sport to create game plans that will exploit his opponents weaknesses while protecting his own well documented weakness.

Amir Khan needs Adam Booth.
