Image: Adamek looks to beat another journeyman in WalkerBy Dan Ambrose: Tomas Adamek (46-2, 28 KO’s) doesn’t take a lot of chances in terms of facing dangerous opposition when trying to get world title shots against the Klitshko brothers.

For the most part, Adamek seems to fight mostly older heavyweights past their prime in looking to get title shots at the heavyweight level. We’ve seen Adamek fight guys like Michael Grant, Andre Golota, Kevin McBride, Vinny Maddalone, Jason Estrada, Nagy Aguilera, Chris Arreola and Eddie Chambers.

Now, Adamek, 35, will be fighting 33-year-old journeyman Travis Walker (39-7-1, 31 KO’s) on September 8th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. This is actually one of Adamek’s better fights in going after a title at heavyweight, even though the chances are very high that Adamek will win this fight. But at least Walker has a puncher’s chance of possibly getting a knockout of the aging Adamek. It’s not likely that Walker will be able to pull off an upset, because he’s never actually beaten a top level fighter before and he’s known for having a fragile chin and a lot of holes in his game. But there is a chance as small as it is.

Adamek looked like an old man in his recent questionable decision over injured Eddie Chambers last June. Adamek fought well enough to lost by six rounds on my scorecard, and a lot of other boxing fans saw Adamek losing by a lopsided decision as well. He won the fight, though, but the performance showed that Adamek is really aging and slowing down. If Walker is able to land his right hand cleanly the way that Chambers was against Adamek, we could see a knockout early in this fight because Walker doesn’t really need to hit you that many times to get you out of there especially if you have a questionable chin like Adamek. WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, not a big puncher, was able to stop Adamek last year in the 10th round after hitting him with a few solid right hands in the 10th.

Most of the fight, Adamek ran from the slower Vitali and was able to avoid his right hands. However, when Vitali was finally able to catch up to Adamek in the 10th, he quickly finished him off with some hard right hands. Walker is a much bigger puncher than Vitali, and if he lands some nice right hands early he could get Adamek out of there quickly.
