Image: Wladimir sells his Olympic gold medal for $1 millionBy Scott Gilfoid: I was shocked to learn that IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko sold his 1996 Olympic Gold medal recently for $1 million. He doesn’t say who the person was who was willing to fork over that kind of cash for his medal.

Wladimir said to Cnn.com “I did sell the medal in March and 100 percent of the funds, which is $1 million, went to the Klitschko brothers foundation. We care about education and sport, that is the key in any children’s life.”

I wouldn’t have any problems selling my trinket either if I fought the guys that Wladimir fought in the 96 Olympics. That had to be one of the weaker Olympics in terms of super heavyweight talent. Instead of talented guys like Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield to compete against, Wladimir merely had to beat this crew of fighters to win his gold medal: Lawrence Clay-Bey, Attila Levin. Alexei Lezin and Paea Wolfgramm. I’d sell my gold medal too if I beat those guys.

You have to wonder what was going through the mind of the person who purchased Wladimir’s gold medal. I mean, it’s not as if it’s going to appreciate in value in the next 30 to 40 years. I could understand if it it were the gold medal that Muhammad Ali won in the Olympics, but with Wladimir, I just don’t see the medal selling for more than the person paid for it, do you? In 30 or more years, I’d be willing to bet that the medal wouldn’t even sell for $100,000. So why buy it?
