By Chris Williams: WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (28-1, 18 KO’s) made weight on Friday for his fight on Saturday against Jeffrey Mathebula (26-3-2, 14 KO’s) at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California. Donaire weighed in at 121.4 pounds, while the 5’10” Mathebula came in at 121.8 lbs.

It was interesting to see Donaire and Mathebula come together for a stare down after the weigh-in. It looked like a man staring down at a small boy. Mathebula was much bigger than the 5’7″ Donaire and they seemed like two fighters in different weight classes.

Super middleweight contender Kelly Pavlik (39-2, 34 KO’s) weighed in at 168.2 lbs, and his opponent Will Rosinsky (16-1, 9 KO’s) came in at the exact same weight at 168.2. Pavlik and Rosinsky will be fighting a 10 round bout. If Pavlik wins this fight his promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank supposedly has a big fight planned for him in the fall. We’ll see about that, because there really aren’t too many available opponents during that time frame. Of course, what Arum considers a big fight and what I consider a big fight are two different things.

I don’t think Pavlik is ready for a big fight judging by his mediocre performance against Scott Sigmon in his last bout last month. Pavlik got a 7th round stoppage, but he looked slow and was hit a lot. It was like watching him in his fights against Sergio Martinez and Bernard Hopkins. There was virtually no improvement in his game, and if anything, Pavlik looks worse than he was back then because he’s slower now.

Will Rosinsky 16(9)-1-0
