Image: Vitali's mismatch against Charr might still leave open the door for a final fight against HayeBy Jason Kim: WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (44-2, 40 KO’s) has put himself into a good situation by picking out one of the weaker heavyweights in the top 15 to fight in unbeaten Manuel Charr (21-0, 11 KO’s) on September 8th at the Olimpiyskiy, in Moscow, Russia.

This is a fight that Vitali is almost guaranteed to shine and impress boxing fans, while at the same time building up his own self confidence for a possible fight against former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye next year.

You can’t blame Vitali for not choosing to fight Haye next because of how poor Vitali looked in his gasping performance against the limited Dereck Chisora last February. This should have been someone that Vitali boxed circles around and or blasted out early. Instead, Vitali struggled with the pressure that Chisora put on him and was forced to move around the ring a lot more than Vitali’s aging body could handle. By the 12th, Vitali was totally gassed and ended up losing the final round, which is very rare for him.

The fight against the heavy and slow Charr is one where Vitali should be able to win with flying colors. Charr is a fat looking heavyweight without a lot of power and with no hand speed whatsoever. The only sanctioning body that has him ranked in the top 15 is the World Boxing Council, and they’ve really done a lot of favors by giving him a high #7 ranking because he looks no better than perhaps #40 in the division, if that. Vitali is going to really punish this guy and win without tiring like he did last time.

If Vitali wins with ease like I think he will, boxing fans will put pressure on him to finally step it up and face Haye for the final fight of his career, if that’s what Vitali wants. It’s hard to imagine that Vitali will choose to retire at this point because he’s still good enough to remain champion for another two years at least, maybe even more.
