Although Thompson was previously beaten by Wladimir in 2008, things are different now that Thompson isn’t sporting any injuries, and he’s had a long year to rest up from his previously busy schedule.

Thompson is coming into this fight fresh, and with his huge size and southpaw stance, you can’t count Thompson out. He’s got enough power and more than enough size to pull off an upset against the fragile-chinned Wladimir. This is the perfect opponent for Thompson to beat, because Wladimir is a lot more vulnerable than his older brother Vitali Klitschko, and all Thompson needs to do is land one big left hand to get the win.

For Thompson to do that, he’s going to need to take a fair amount of straight hands from Wladimir in order to land something big himself. Thompson doesn’t really need to worry about Wladimir’s jabs or left hook, because he doesn’t throw those punches anymore it seems. Wladimir has become mostly just a right hand puncher and he follows the right hands with predictable clinches. There’s no versatility with Wladimir’s offense anymore. It’s either a right hand or a clinch.

Thompson can beat this version of Wladimir and guarantee himself a rematch where he’ll get a lot more money. The only thing Thompson needs to worry about is the right hands from Wladimir. The best way to keep from getting hit with Wladimir’s rights is to get to him early, because Wladimir starts slowly and doesn’t really get his offense in gear until the second half of his fights. He’s vulnerable against fighters that start fast and push him hard in the first six rounds.
