Martinez told thaboxingvoice.com “I’m not comfortable because Chavez Jr did test positive for diuretic before and there were doubts that he has been tested in his last two fights. But honestly, if I would have asked for extra testing, I don’t think we would have a fight.”

In other words, Chavez Jr’s management may have gone in another direction had Martinez asked for the extra testing for performance enhancing drugs.

Martinez is just going to have to take his chances that the drug testing that they have in place for their fight on HBO pay-per-view will be enough to catch anything if there’s any cheating going on. But whatever the case, Martinez needs to be prepared for the likely reality that Chavez Jr. will almost surely come into the fight weighing close to or over 180 pounds for the fight.

Martinez himself will likely come in at 164 or slightly less than that, and that should give Chavez Jr. a pretty big weight advantage for the fight after he rehydrates from making the 160 pound weight limit for the fight, if he makes it. Sooner or later, Chavez Jr. is going to fail at making weight. When you’re weighing over 180 and coming down all the way to 160, there’s always possibility that Chavez Jr can fail to make weight. The fight will still go on even if Chavez Jr doesn’t make weight. The only thing that would change is that his World Boxing Council 160 pound title would be stripped from him, but still be available for Martinez to try and capture it.
