Martinez said this about Chavez Jr. as quoted by fightnews.com “I plan to really beat you up, Jr. I’m very motivated for this fight.”

Martinez has said recently that he’s going to pluck Chavez Jr’s feathers when he gets him in the ring, referring to how Chavez Jr. didn’t seem to be in a big hurry to fight him since picking up Martinez’s old title last year.

Chavez Jr. believes that Martinez will be running all around the ring on September 15th, and that he’ll have to chase Martinez down in order to land shots. This may be partly true, because Martinez generally doesn’t stand in front of his opponents all night long. Martinez prefers to hit and move. He’s got the Roy Jones Jr. style of fighting, and that uses movement. Chavez Jr. fights with the same style as his dad by coming straight at his opponents looking to put pressure on them. Chavez Jr. can use movement as well, but because of his weight he usually can’t move well for more than a couple of rounds without tiring.

If Chavez Jr. weighed around the same amount as Martinez then it would be more of a toe-to-toe fight because Martinez wouldn’t be giving away so much weight. However, in looking at the press conference photos, you can see that Chavez Jr. looks like he’s weighing close to 200 pounds. He’ll lose a little bit of that weight during training camp, and then lose the rest of it by dehydrating. But basically he’s a fighter that weighs over 180 and that’s why Martinez can’t stand and trade in a traditional battle. Chavez Jr. is like cruiserweight. He’ll do well as long as he stays at middleweight, but you put Chavez Jr. at 168, 175, and he’s going to struggle because he won’t have a huge size advantage anymore unless he bulks up over 200 lbs and dehydrates down to 168 or 175 to still have an advantage.
