Martinez said “There’s no way Chavez Jr. can beat me. I will knock him out inside seven rounds…[I will] give Junior a real beating. He won’t be eating solid food with the few teeth remaining after I get through with him.”

Chavez Jr. is going to take some serious punishment against Martinez in their fight on HBO pay-per-view, but it’s still up in the air whether Chavez Jr. can get to Martinez the same way Chavez Jr. has gotten to other top fighters recently in wins over Sebastian Zbik, Peter Manfredo Jr., Marco Antonio Rubio and Andy Lee.

Chavez Jr. gets hit a lot in his fights, and clearly defense isn’t one of his strong suits. However, his ability to walk through big shots enables him to get in range to land his own shots, and his opponents are rarely able to take his withering fire for a full 12 rounds nowadays. Chavez Jr. seems to have gotten stronger as well as heavier. While it’s normal in boxing for fighters to bulk up as many as 20 pounds after they weigh-in, they’re usually not as strong after having shed all that weight and put it back on. Chavez Jr. is able to do it without being weakened, and that makes him very dangerous because he’s like a light heavyweight fighting middleweights.

Martinez is a lot faster than the guys that Chavez Jr. has been fighting lately, and he’s also a stronger puncher. You can add to that his southpaw stance and his quick delivery of his shots, and it makes him a very tough opponent for Chavez Jr. to be facing. Chavez Jr. is going to get hit a lot in this fight, and he’s probably going to get hit with shots that he won’t see coming. Perhaps he’ll be able to take the big shots like he’s done in the past. We’ll have to see, but if he’s not able to pin Martinez to the ropes like he’s done with his huge size against other opposition, Chavez Jr. is going to be in for a long night on September 15th.
