Image: Schaefer: Khan will not become an undercard fighter; Garcia rematch being looked atBy William Mackay: Amir Khan has now been beaten in his last two fights after suffering his latest defeat, a 4th round TKO loss to WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last Saturday night. For most fighters that would be enough for them to be demoted to fighting on undercards, but not Khan. Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer plans on keeping Khan as a head of the bill fighter regardless of his lack of success.

Schaefer is interested in getting Khan back in with Garcia in a rematch soon as possible. Khan may have to fight one bout in between a rematch, but that’s all.

Schaefer told dailymail.co.uk “The rematch is the biggest fight out there in the welterweight division. but we will have to sit down with Team Garcia and Team Khan to see if they want to pursue that…One thing for sure is that Amir will not become an undercard fighter. He’s too exciting for that.”

Schaefer may have his work cut out for him in getting the Garcia rematch, as Angel Garcia, the father/trainer for Danny, said he’s not interested in Danny fighting Khan again. He doesn’t see any upside in Danny facing Khan again because the fight was so one-sided after Garcia hurt Khan in the 3rd.

Schaefer might be able to still get away with Khan being packaged as a top of the bill fighter for now, but if he keeps losing like he’s doing now it’s going to be a tough sell. HBO will likely be the first casualty, because they generally don’t like to have the main events having a fighter showcased that’s losing repeatedly.

If Garcia says no to the Khan fight, Schaefer says he’ll look to put Khan in with the winner of the Randall Bailey vs. Devon Alexander fight. Other possibilities are WBA World welterweight champion Paulie Malignaggi and Robert Guerrero, two Golden Boy Promotions fighters. Khan already has a knockout win over Malignaggi dating back to 2010. Malignaggi probably will say no to a Khan rematch. Guerrero would definitely take a fight against Khan, though. Guerrero has to get by Selcuk Aydin later on this month on July 28th.
