Schaefer: Khan will get the last laugh

Image: Schaefer: Khan will get the last laughBy William Mackay: Amir Khan’s promoter Richard Schaefer launched into a long tirade aimed at Khan’s critics and IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch for having the nerve to criticize Khan after he got knocked silly by WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia last Saturday night.

It’s unclear why Schaefer went after Froch, because he was misquoted in an interview at the BBC Sport where he mentioned what he himself would do if he were to get knocked out by Lucian Bute. Somehow things got twisted and some people got the impression he was talking about Froch wanting Khan to retire.

Schaefer said to RingTV “Froch will never be able to capture the American audience the way that Amir Khan has…No network here in the U.S is jumping up and down and asking when we can have Carl Froch back…Believe me, Amir and I, and his entire team will, in the end, be the ones who will have the last laugh.”

Boy, talk about being touchy. Schaefer probably shouldn’t be making positive predictions about Khan’s future after his latest knockout loss, because the chances are incredibly high that Schaefer is going to look silly once Khan is put in with another good fighter and he gets knocked out again. I guess Schaefer can have the last laugh if they spoon feed Khan guys like Paul McCloskey, Paulie Malignaggi, and Zab Judah again.

I imagine Khan can still beat those guys, but that’s saying much. But if he’s talking about Khan beating good opposition like Danny Garcia, Devon Alexander, Randall Bailey, Lucas Matthysse, Ajose Olusegun, and Mike Alvarado, I think Schaefer is going to be wishing he’d not put Khan in with any of them. Right now Khan has three losses on his resume. It’s not fatal at this point, but he’s heading for the Enzo Maccarinelli type future if he keeps getting knocked out every time they put him in with someone with decent power.

Another knockout loss for Khan, and it’s going to be looking bleak for him. Schaefer can try and whitewash it all he wants by saying how television networks still want Khan, but will they still want him after his 4th loss? How his 5th? Will they still want him? It’s going be forlorn by that point, and thing is Khan is real close to getting to that point. It’ll only take a couple more losses and he’s there. I just hope Schaefer still isn’t talking about getting the last laugh because it’ll be a sad joke by then.
