Image: Saul Alvarez needs to step it up after he destroys Josesito LopezBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions really needs to start matching their fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez against much better opposition after he destroys light welterweight Josesito Lopez on September 15th in front of what will probably be a packed house at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Golden Boy seems to be protecting their golden goose a little too well at this point, and it’s becoming laughable with the mismatches that they’re setting him up.

Golden Boy can’t keep setting up these terrible mismatches for Alvarez each time out. If they’re setting up with poor opposition because of his age, then they need to have him vacate the WBC title and wait until he gets older to hold it down. That way Alvarez can continue to fight light welterweights like Joseito Lopez, welterweights like Matthew Hatton and older guys like 40-year-old Shane Mosley, 40-year-old Carlos Baldomir and 40-year-old Lovemore N’dou. Sadly, those are the guys that Alvarez has faced recently and that’s pretty sad.

Golden Boy has a lot of better opponents they can be matching Alvarez against in the future after he blows out the stick-like Lopez on Showtime. I’m really hoping that they finally put Alvarez in with at least good opponent, because right now it looks like they’re creating a fighter that isn’t as good as his record would have you believe. I saw some of that when Alvarez seemed to be stressing out from the pressure from Mosley in his last fight. Instead of staying calm and cool when getting hit with Mosley’s weaker shots, Alvarez looked flustered. I can only imagine how Alvarez would react if it were someone like Erislandy Lara that he was in with.
