Image: Roy Jones Jr. interested in going after cruiserweight titleBy Dan Ambrose: 43-year-old Roy Jones Jr’s sagging career got a shot of energy with Jones’s 10 round split decision victory over Pawel Glazewski (17-1, 4 KO’s) on Sautrday night at the Atlas Arena, Lodz, Poland. It might have been better for Jones had he lost the fight by a narrow decision and then decided to retire off the loss.

Instead, the victory has Jones Jr. eying a world title shot against one of the cruiserweight champions. That’s probably a really bad idea for Jones Jr., because he doesn’t have the chin, reflexes or the size to compete against the current crop of champions. Jones is likely not interested in facing champions Marco Huck, Ola Afolabi or Guillermo Jones.

The fighter that Jones will likely fight in the near future is WBC cruiserweight champion Krzstof Wlodarczyk in a fight that will probably take place in Poland like last Saturday’s fight. Jones is well liked in Poland, and he seemed to enjoy the attention he was given. But a fight against Wlodarczyk is a really bad idea for Jones, because this guy can punch, as we saw with his 11th round knockout win over former Jones conqueror Danny Green last November.

Jones says he wants to capture one of the cruiserweight titles before he retires from the sport. However, you can imagine that Jones would keep going if he were to get lucky enough to upset the odds and win a title in that division. Jones just seems destined for his career to end on bad note with him getting knocked out badly. He doesn’t need to win a title in that division because he’s already captured a world title in the heavyweight division back in 2003 with his win over John Ruiz.
