Robert Guerrero: Mayweather has to face me or give up his title

Guerrero said “Floyd’s got a decision to make, either step in the ring with me, or give up his title. It’s your choice, Pretty Boy.”

That’s an easy choice. Mayweather will gladly dump the WBC strap, if the World Boxing Council tries to force him to waste a fight by facing the less than popular Guerrero. Somehow, I don’t see the WBC doing that because Mayweather brings in so much money in terms of sanctioning fees each time he defends the WBC title. If they strip him of the title, the money that Guerrero brings in will be a lot less no doubt. Guerrero won’t last long as the WBC champion anyway if the WBC makes him the champion. Unless Guerrero’s promoters at Golden Boy can keep him away from the top welterweight contenders like Andre Berto, Kell Brook, Devon Alexander, Victor Ortiz and Thomas Dulorme, then Guerrero will lose his title in his first defense. Golden Boy needs to try as hard as possible to get the Mayweather fight for Guerrero, and if not, they’ll likely need to have him milk it by facing the bottom feeders in the division for him to be able to hold onto it for any length of time.

It’s not that Guerrero is a bad fighter. He’s actually got really good skills. The problem is he doesn’t have the power to compete at 147 against the best fighters in the division. He got a win over #1 WBC Aydin, but that was an opponent that had no business being ranked at the No.1 spot to begin with. That was a really weird ranking that the WBC gave to Aydin, because he’s never proven himself to be more than a bottom 15 guy. Guerrero would have been out of his league had he fought someone like Alexander, Ortiz or Berto. I think those would have massacred him in no time.

Let’s be honest here. Guerrero isn’t going to get a fight against Mayweather, and if the WBC strips Mayweather of his title it won’t matter because he’s beyond titles. It won’t hurt him. Guerrero will simply be facing a lesser name and will still likely lose the title in his first fight unless, like I said, Golden Boy matches him against bottom feeders in the division.
