Image: Robert Guerrero is going to have to find some power or he won't last long at 147By Jason Kim: Robert Guerrero (30-1-1, 18 KO’s) made what many boxing fans felt was a desperate move by jumping up two weight divisions to face previously unbeaten Selcuk Aydin (23-1, 17 KO’s) last night in San Jose, California. The gamble paid off with the 29-year-old Guerrero pounding out a 12 round unanimous decision.

However, Guerrero was far from impressive against a welterweight that is more of a fringe level fighter than a true #1 WBC contender. That’s the unfortunate part about boxing. The sanctioning bodies oftentimes rank contenders too highly in terms of their actual talent. Aydin would be out of his class against many the top 15 contenders in the welterweight division, but with the watering down of the division with the four sanctioning bodies, Aydin found himself ranked #1. Guerrero did not look good in that fight, and he seemed to have left what little power he had at lightweight when he moved up in weight to the welterweight division.

Guerrero got the win, but his problems are only now beginning. Unless he’s able to find some power in the near future, he’s going to be quickly weeded out of the division without getting the big fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. that he so badly craves. Let’s be real about Guerrero’s chances of getting that fight. They’re not good, not in December, and likely not at all.

Guerrero didn’t do himself any favors by jumping straight into the WBC interim spot, because he’ll now have to either be protected by his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions from fighters like #2 Devon Alexander, #3 Thomas Dulorme, #4 Victor Ortiz, or he’s going to end up getting beaten.

Those guys all hit as hard as Aydin, if not harder, but they’re much better fighters because they throw a lot more punches and are able to throw with excellent power all the time. Guerrero will be in a world of hurt if he faces any of those guys with his weak slapping punches and his poor stamina. It will be too easy for them to beat Guerrero right now, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.
