Robert Guerrero: A win over Aydin and I’ll be Mayweather’s mandatory

He wants it so bad that he’s willing to move up two entire divisions coming off of serious rotator cuff surgery on his left shoulder in order to get that fight.

Guerrero will be facing #1 WBC 147 pound contender Selcuk Aydin (23-0, 17 KO’s) on July 28th at the HP Pavilion, in San Jose, California. The World Boxing Council has seen fit to give Guerrero a #5 ranking despite the fact that he’s never fought in the division before. It’s always interesting when you see a sanctioning body give a fighter an inflated ranking when they’ve never fought one fight in a division before like Guerrero.

Guerrero told boxinginsider.com “This fight [against Aydin] is going to put me in the mandatory spot to fight him [Mayweather].”

Guerrero is kidding himself if he thinks he’s going to get a title shot against Mayweather Jr. if he beats Aydin. That’s not going to happen, and it reminds me of Anthony Mundine, a fighter that is talking about his goal of fighting Mayweather after beating five contenders. It’s probably not going to happen for Mundine and I see Guerrero as being in the same boat. He doesn’t have the star appeal and beating Aydin isn’t going to be enough.

I have serious reservations whether Guerrero will even win this fight, because he doesn’t have the same kind of power that Aydin does, and he’ll likely be slower, and weaker from putting on weight and coming off of rotator cuff surgery on his left shoulder. That’s Guerrero’s power side, as he’s a southpaw. He’s says he back to where he was before, but I’ve never seen a fighter regain the strength they once had after having that kind of surgery.

Guerrero plans on trying to box his way to a decision win over Aydin. Perhaps Guerrero can do that if he stays on the outside all night, but it’s going to be difficult because Aydin cuts off the ring well and he’ll be constantly in Guerrero’s face in this fight.
