Image: Roach: Khan will neutralize Garcia's offense by using movementBy William Mackay: Trainer Freddie Roach has spilled the beans about what his fighter Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) will be doing to try and defeat unbeaten WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Roach plans on having Khan use a lot of movement to keep the 24-year-old Garcia from landing his shots.

In other words, Khan will run like he did in his fights against Marcos Maidana, Andriy Kotelnik and Lamont Peterson.

Roach told RingTV “We’re going to fight at a fast pace, throw a lot of combinations. With Amir’s speed, in and out and side to side, I think we’re going to nullify his offense. And I think we’re going to fight a good fight.”

Roach might was to rethink the idea of Khan fighting a fast pace for this bout, because this is what Khan did in his fights against Maidana, Paul McCloskey and Peterson, and we saw how exhausted Khan was by the 6th round. It really hurt Khan in the Maidana and Peterson fights, because Khan took a lot of punishment in those fights when he ran out of gas.

Instead of pushing Khan to fight at a really fast pace where he runs out of energy fast due to his wasted punches that hit mostly air and his useless running, Roach should have Khan fight in a more controlled manner to conserve energy. Khan throws punches without really aiming and he’s wild. It’s no wonder that he gasses out in the second half of this fights. And all the needless running that Khan does. He runs even when he doesn’t have to, and it clearly exhausts him after a certain point.

Khan probably can’t stand and fight Garcia in a traditional manner because of his weak chin, but he still can move slower around the ring instead running and throwing combinations that miss. Khan leaves himself open by being too busy. Sooner or later, he’s going to get knocked out from someone that catches him with a big shots. It may happen on Saturday night with Garcia clipping him with a big shots while Khan is in the process of trying to land a big shot of his own.
