Image: Roach: Khan is going to hit and move against GarciaBy William Mackay: Freddie Roach has laid out how he plans on having Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) fight WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KO’s) on Saturday and it pretty much is the carbon copy style that Khan used in his loss to Lamont Peterson last December. Roach is going to have Khan hitting and running the entire fight so that he doesn’t get caught with anything big from Garcia.

It’s basically how Khan always fights and always has fought since turning pro. The only time Khan deviates from this style of fighting is when he’s facing weak opposition like Dimitri Salita and Paul McCloskey.

Roach said to Sky Sports Ringside “We’re [Khan] not going to be there. He’s [Garcia] not going to find us. We’re not going to stand there in front of [him]. I told Amir 1, 1-2-3 at most. We can’t stay in the pocket more than three punches because this gives him [Garcia] time to counter punch off. So we have a very good game plan. He’ll never be able to deal with our [Khan] speed and power. He [Garcia] has good punching power. With his left hook, he can knock you out. He’s a pretty durable guy. He takes a pretty good shot, but the way that Amir has been sitting down on his shots, I think he’s in trouble this time.”

It sounds great that Khan is sitting down on his shots in training, but he’s probably not going to be able to do this in the fight. Once the headgear is off and it’s the real thing, Khan tends to slap with his shots because he’s too cautious about getting hit with something. More than most fighters, Khan doesn’t seem to like to get hit, and this prevents him from sitting down on his shots to get maximum power. For this reason Khan is little more than a run and slap fighter despite what Roach says. Roach paints a picture of Khan that doesn’t exist in reality. He won’t sit down on his punches in this fight, because for Khan to do that he’ll have to open himself to getting hit with one of Garcia’s powerful left hooks and right hands. I don’t think Khan will be open to that, and he’ll run like he always does.
