Price back in October: Opponent to be announced in the next week, likely Audley Harrison

By Dan Henderson: Liverpool’s David Price is expected to announce the opponent for the first defence of his British heavyweight title next week. The 29-year-old British and Commonwealth champion has set a date in his hometowns ECHO Arena venue for October, with Audley Harrison rumoured to be the name in the frame for what should be Price’s first fight on BoxNation TV after his promoter Frank Maloney struck a deal with subscription TV station Boxnation.

Price dominated Sam Sexton on his way to a fourth round stoppage victory in May to pick up the vacant British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles which were held by Tyson Fury, who had in my opinion avoided the fight with Price but each to their own. I admit it would have been a difficult fight to put together due to Fury’s commitment to channel 5 but it could have been done.

There has been a lot of rumors flying around about who would get the fight and the possibility of it being Audrey Harrison is a strong one. A meeting between Price and Harrison, who is a former EBU champion and for some reason still a name here in the UK will put bums in seats because Harrison is a name that will attract the casual fan. The other names being thrown about are the likes of Michael Sprott, Matt Skelton and Dereck Chisora. Michael Sprott and Matt Skelton are not viable options and wouldn’t make selling out the ECHO Arena easy and Chisora has just fought David Haye and will want a couple of tune up fights before he comes back at championship level.

All will be announced next week but it looks ever so likely that it will be Audley Harrison and I’m sure that will disappoint the majority of you out there but he is still a name in the British scene.

Let me know what you think.
