Pacquiao will continue to have problems if he can only fight hard at the end of every round

Image: Pacquiao will continue to have problems if he can only fight hard at the end of every roundBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao tried an old veteran trick of doing zero until the last 30 seconds of every round in his loss to Tim Bradley last June. Whether it was intentional or due to his advancing age, Pacquiao was only able to really put out any effort in the waning seconds of each three minute round with the unbeaten Bradley.

The judges, all old and wise having seen these tricks before from fighters, weren’t about to ignore how Bradley was dominating the action in the first 2 1/2 minutes of each round. So instead of giving Pacquiao rounds were he only fought hard for a fraction of the time, the judges did what they felt was the right thing by giving Bradley most of the round.

In November, Pacquiao will be back in the ring against possibly Bradley or Juan Manuel Marquez in rematches. Although Pacquiao has said that he’ll avenge his loss to Bradley by knocking him out, you have to imagine that he won’t be able to do this if all he can do is put out enough effort to fight hard for 20 to 30 seconds. Unless the judges are the type that have amnesia to what occurred in the major portions of each round, they’re going to give it to Pacquiao’s opponent.

What this means is that Pacquiao is going to have to get with his trainer Freddie Roach and strength trainer Alex Ariza to try and build up his conditioning to where Pacquiao can fight hard for a full three minutes of every round like he used to do. It may not be possible for him, because when a veteran gets old like Pacquiao is starting to get, they’re stamina takes a big hit. That’s why you see the young lions always dragging down an old toothless lion. Pacquiao might have the better power, but if he can’t even fight hard for three minutes of every round what difference does it make?
