Not many options for Khan’s next fight in December

Image: Not many options for Khan's next fight in DecemberBy William Mackay: In surveying the light welterweight division there really isn’t all that much out there for Amir Khan as far as well known fighters for his next fight in December. All the big names are either busy, coming off a fight or out one reason or another. Khan wanted to fight a rematch against WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia, but it won’t be happening now that Garcia chose to fight a rematch against Erik Morales next.

This all that’s left for Khan at 140 now that Garcia is off the table:

Zab Judah
Paul McCloskey
Humberto Soto
Joan Guzman
Dierry Jean
DeMarcus Corley
Jessie Vargas
Kendall Holt
Vernon Paris
Mauricio Herrera
Mike Alvarado
Johan Perez

Most of those guys aren’t well known enough for Khan to fight, if his promoter Richard Schaefer is intent on having Khan as a top of the card attraction like he says he is. You can’t put Khan in with those guys and call it a main event if Golden Boy wants HBO to televise them. Most of them Golden Boy probably won’t want to risk Khan against anyway because a lot of them punch hard. You think Shaefer is going to risk putting Khan in with Alvarado, Corley or Herrera? It’s not going to happen.

One fighter I can see Golden Boy matching Khan up against is Judah again. It’s a fight that doesn’t make any sense because Khan recently knocked Judah out while holding him down, but Judah is well known and probably not much of a threat if he fights like he did last time. If Golden Boy had no qualms about matching Danny Garcia back with Erik Morales despite the fact that Garcia already easily beat Morales earlier this year, then I can see them doing the same with Khan and Judah.

If Judah doesn’t get the fight, then Golden Boy will likely look for a fighter from the lightweight or welterweight divisions for Khan to fight. More likely lightweight division, because a welterweight would be dangerous for Khan right about now.
