Mayweather vs. Cotto II is the smart move

Image: Mayweather vs. Cotto II is the smart moveBy Chris Williams: With a fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) and Manny Pacquiao not a real possibility with the Filipino still wanting a 50-50 financial split of the pie, Mayweather’s best bet to make as much money as possible in his next fight is a rematch against Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KO’s) in December.

After Pacquiao, Cotto is the #3 money fighter in boxing, and it’s a no-brainer for Mayweather to fight him again to show that he’s a much better fighter than he showed in his 12 round unanimous decision victory last May against the Puerto Rican.

The options are a fight against WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez or a bout against Sergio Martinez. Neither of those fights compare with a rematch against Cotto, because neither Alvarez or Martinez are really pay-per-view fighters. I know Golden Boy wants the 22-year-old Alvarez to be a PPV star right now, but he still hasn’t achieved that status because of his youth and the lack of exposure in the United States. Alvarez has only had a handful of fights on television in the U.S, and those fights have all been terrible mismatches going in, such as his fight against 40-year-old Shane Mosley. In that respect, Golden Boy hasn’t done Alvarez any favors by matching him so softly.

Cotto fought well against Mayweather last time out, and had he not run out of gas in the part of the fight, Cotto might have pulled out a victory. Mayweather said he could have easily beaten Cotto if he wanted to by choosing to box him, but instead chose to slug it out with him in order to make it exciting for boxing fans. I believe Mayweather. He’s really trying hard to entertain fans by changing his fighting style to attract more fans.

Pacquiao is a possibility in the future for Mayweather, but for that to happen the Filipino is going to have to take a smaller cut of the pie so that the fight can be made. Pacquiao lost his last fight against Tim Bradley, and the fight didn’t do well on PPV. That right there is probably enough for Pacquiao to only deserve a 40 percent cut. If Pacquiao looks awful in his next fight, we could see that drop down to 30%.
