Golovkin, 30, had his original opponent Dimitriy Pirog drop out after he injured his back in training.

Martirosyan, 26, a Freddie Roach trained fighter with Top Rank Promotions, is supposed to be fighting Erislandy Lara in a WBC junior middleweight title eliminator bout with the winner to face WBC 154 pound champion Saul Alvarez in 2013. However, Martirosyan is willing to move up in weight and face Golovkin instead if Martirosyan is approved by Golovkin’s management.

Golovkin’s management will pick whichever fighter that HBO wants for that date. In that case, Martirosyan might get selected because his fights have been shown before on HBO in the past, although it might not be nearly as interesting as a fight between Golovkin and Proksa because Martirosyan is more of a hit and run fighter in the Amir Khan mold.

Golovkin has looked good recently, defeating Nilson Julio Tapia, Lajuan Simon, Kassim Ouma and Makoto Fuchigami in his last four fights in impressive fashion. Golovkin wants to make a name for himself in the United States, but he needs better quality opposition for him to do that. Either Proksa or Martirosyan would be a good first step for Golovkin if he can get past them.

Martirosyan has good power, but he rarely uses it now that he’s trained by Roach, who has turned him into more of a boxer. His fights are much less interesting to watch because of that, however. Proska has the better power, and he likes to pot shot his opponents into submission. He lacks boxing skills and can be beaten with pressure, as we saw in his loss to Kerry Hope recently.
