Kim: Dirrell would be a bad match-up for Groves

Image: Kim: Dirrell would be a bad match-up for GrovesBy Scott Gilfoid: Writer Steve Kim doesn’t see a fight between unbeaten British super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) and Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KO’s) going well for Groves if and when they ever fight.

Kim said on his twitter page “Dirrell is a bad matchup for him [Groves]…and TO [Thomas Oosthuizen] might be too big. Dirrell’s style is effective but it’s poison.”

I agree with Kim. Dirrell is a really bad matchup for Groves because of his lack of hand speed and his wide open defense compared to the talented Dirrell. Groves is just too slow and he has a bad habit of fighting with his left hand down by his waist instead of holding it up to guard his head. If you fight like that against a talent like Dirrell, he’s going to drill you with lead right hands and left hooks all night long.

Groves doesn’t have the speed to land with any consistency against Dirrell. So instead of seeing a fight that would be competitive, we’d have Groves throwing wild shots that would hit air night long while Dirrell calmly picked him off with pinpoint right hands, jabs and left hooks. I think it would a one-sided fight with Dirrell totally schooling Groves from start to finish, but I wouldn’t mind seeing it if Groves’ promoter would let it happen. I doubt that, though.

This fight isn’t going to happen anytime soon because Groves, 24, is still being carefully matched by his promoters. He beat a 2nd tier fighter Francisco Sierra last weekend by a 6th round TKO after getting badly bloodied and puffed up by Sierra. Groves will next likely try and fight a pointless rematch against Kenny Anderson. The fight makes absolutely no sense given that Groves already knocked Anderson out in the 6th round two years ago in November 2010. But these are the fights that Groves has to fight because he for some reason doesn’t want to dump his British strap.

It’s like a heavy anchor for Groves, pulling him down constantly backwards against opponents he should have been moving past ages ago.
