Image: Khan with a lot riding on Garcia fightBy William Mackay: Despite turning pro with a lot of boxing fans seeing greatness from him, Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) has already been twice in only seven years as a pro, and was lucky to have escaped his fight against Marcos Maidana with a win after being badly hurt in the 10th round.

Khan lost his last fight against Lamont Peterson. However, the defeat didn’t mortally wound Khan’s career all that much because his opponent Lamont Peterson later tested positive for synthetic testosterone.

That gave Khan some cover for the loss, but still Khan was supposed to have easily beaten the light hitting Peterson. Seeing Khan lose to a fighter like him isn’t a good sign for the future for Khan. Peterson was easily beaten by Tim Bradley, and should have been beaten by Victor Ortiz.

Khan will be fighting for the WBC and WBA 140 pound titles on July 14th against WBC champ Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KO’s) in Las Vegas. Khan himself is promising a knockout, and his fans see it as an almost guaranteed win for Khan. However, Khan also thought he’d easily take care of Peterson, as did his fans, and we saw what happened to Khan in that fight.

If Khan wants to stay at the top of the division and considered a future opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr., he has to defeat Garcia. If he gets beaten this time Khan won’t be able to explain away the loss by blaming it on the judges, the referee, the mystery man, the scorecards, or steroids. It’s like crying wolf. Boxing fans will buy the excuses once, but if it becomes a regular habit with Khan each time he loses, then they’ll see it for what it is – just another excuse. But it’ll look slightly ridiculous of Khan to be blaming the judges or referee each time he loses, and I don’t know what he can say if he gets knocked out. What excuse can Khan come up with if Garcia knocks him cold?
