Image: Khan: The Mayweather fight will happen and I've got the skills to beat himBy William Mackay: Once again Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) is pulling Floyd Mayweather Jr’s name out of the hat to keep boxing fans aware that he still sees himself getting a fight with him, and Khan still sees himself beating Floyd.

Perhaps we could take Khan a little more serious had he not lost his last fight against Lamont Peterson and looked really bad in doing so. Khan’s fans think he did enough to deserve a win in that fight, but they can’t ignore the fact that Khan looked horrible from the pressure that Peterson put on him. That wasn’t a performance that would suggest A. that Khan deserves a fight against Mayweather and B. that Khan could beat him.

Khan said to Sky Sports Ringside “The Mayweather fight is a fight in the future that will happen, and I know I have the skills to beat him.”

Well, that depends on how far in the future Khan is talking about. If he’s talking like in three to five years, I give him a good chance of beating Floyd by then because he’ll be near 40 and will probably have deteriorated enough for Khan to finally have a chance at beating him if he didn’t get disqualified for shoving, pulling down on Mayweather’s head or putting him in headlocks all night. But if Khan is talking about beating Mayweather in early 2013, then he’s dreaming.

Mayweather is still much too skilled and precise with his punches to let a fighter that misses tons of shots like Khan beat him. I can just picture Khan rushing forward throwing a flurry of shots with most of them hitting air while Mayweather calmly picks him apart with precise shots. It would end early because Khan would get hit with an accurate shot while he’s flurrying and it wouldn’t see the shot coming.

If Khan were smart, he’d focus on his opponent for this Saturday WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia instead of looking over his shoulder towards a dream fight against Mayweather Jr. Garcia is good enough to put Khan out of his misery. Khan lost his last fight against Peterson, and was knocked out by Breidis Prescott in 2008. Garcia can finish Khan’s dreams of ever getting a fight against Mayweather by knocking him out this Saturday.
