Khan is too high maintenance for Roach

Image: Khan is too high maintenance for RoachBy Chris Williams: Some fighters are simply too needy and too high maintenance to be worth the trouble of having them around in the first place. I think Amir Khan (26-3, 18 KO’s) might be one of those types of fighters for trainer Freddie Roach. Having a needy fighter like Khan around is a negative because when he does fail, and you know he’s going to, the trainer has the spotlight put on him for somehow failing him. The trainer is put in the hot seat all of a sudden, and you get people questioning whether the trainer knows what he’s doing.

The thing is Roach didn’t do anything wrong. He gave Khan the right advice before and during the fight, but Khan chose to ignore it for some reason. But Roach still takes the heat afterwards because he technically was the one who trained Khan and was in charge of the Khan ship when he went down against Danny Garcia.

You see Khan isn’t like Manny Pacquiao where you can count on him taking any amount of shots in order to land his own punches.

I don’t rate Pacquiao compared to guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr., but he’s someone that you don’t need to worry a lot because he’s going to be okay for the most part as long as he doesn’t get matched up against Mayweather.

But with Khan, Roach has got someone whose chin is fragile, and who now is going to be needing a lot of Roach’s valuable time to try and fix what can’t be fixed. Khan’s chin makes him vulnerable and no amount of time spent by Roach with him is going to change that. As such, Roach has got a time drain on his hands with Khan, and that might not be worth the hassles of having a needy fighter like him around. You can count on Khan winning some fights, and beating the weaker fighters without any power like Paulie Malignaggi and Paul McCloskey, but then Khan will fail you when he’s put in with someone with power or the ability to put pressure on him. That’s where you’ll see Khan fail.
